May 4, 2006
Dear Arroyo Partners,
You are invited to the next Arroyo Colorado Steering Committee and greater Partnership meeting scheduled for Thursday, May 25, 2006 from 6 PM to 9 PM in the Rio Red Classroom of the Citrus Center. The Citrus Center is located on 312 N. International Blvd, Weslaco, Texas. Please make every effort to attend as we will be reviewing the draft Arroyo Colorado Watershed Protection Plan (ACWPP) which combines the work and recommendations from all the work groups. Note that the major components of the plan have been worked out by the different work groups and certain aspects of the plan are already being implemented. At the meeting, will be discussing any outstanding issues and be taking any additional ideas and comments.
Currently, the final draft of the Habitat component of the plan is under peer review with comments due tomorrow May 5, 2006. Kay Jenkins of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and the members of the Habitat Work Group did an impressive job of producing their component of the plan. Their eighty-five page report gives a thorough review of the terrestrial and aquatic habitats of the Lower Rio Grande Valley, discusses the institutional framework for habitat related projects, reviews the "toolkit" of best management practices as recommended by our consultants, and recommends actions for improving the quality of water and habitat associated with the Arroyo Colorado watershed. These recommendations will be included as actions items in the ACWPP. I will post this document on our website after this final round of reviews and will let you know when you can access it.
Our new brochure promoting elements of the plan and how the general public can help clean up the Arroyo Colorado is now posted on www.arroyocolorado.org. It can be found in Watershed Info-- Fact Sheets, under the title "Arroyo Colorado - The Little Waterway with a Big Job". Check out our new logo. It is a Kingfisher bird with a little fish in its mouth and the tag line reads "Know it. Respect it. Enjoy it." I have gotten good feedback on the logo and brochure and I hope you like it. We had a limited number of brochures printed and I already know that we are going to need many more. Partners, please check the budget of your department or organization for any extra funds that could be used to print additional brochures to help promote our watershed protection effort. Your logo would be added as a sponsor and you would recieve outreach and education credit.
On a final note, I have begun to send out sections of the first draft of the integrated plan for peer review. I will send sections to the Steering Committee for their review prior to the scheduled meeting.
Thank you for your support,
