January 22, 2008
Hola Arroyo Partners,
First of all, this is a reminder that there will be a series of Arroyo Colorado Watershed Partnership meetings this upcoming Thursday, January 24, 2008. The Agricultural Issues work group will meet from 10:00 a.m. to noon; the Habitat Restoration work group meets from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.; and the Steering Committee/Partnership meeting is from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. All meetings are open to the public and will be held in the Rio Red Classroom of the Citrus Center in Weslaco. Attached are the meeting agendas.
Much is going on in regards to the implementation of the Arroyo Colorado Watershed Protection Plan. On top of general outreach and education, our agricultural work group continues agricultural best management practice education in the watershed; water quality monitoring is about to begin in the Ag Assessment project; and work has begun on the SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model. The four cities wetland project is progressing and we continue to apply for grants and develop partnerships. Detailed updates on these projects and more will be presented at the meetings.
One issue that we have been discussing for the past year is long-term sustainability of the Arroyo Partnership. Do we form our own 501(c)3 or umbrella under an existing local organization? Currently, we are investigating the possibility of working with the Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council (LRGVDC) to transition into a stand alone organization. Our Steering Committee will be discussing this issue at the Thursday night meeting.
Mark you calendars for a couple of upcoming events. Tomorrow the Horticulture Society is sponsoring a free evening program, which includes talks by Barbara Storz on organic vegetable gardening, antique roses by Jennifer Wilson, and a presentation from Dr. Boris Castro on new insect pests. The program will be held at the Texas A&M - Citrus Center staring at 6:00 p.m. And on February 9, 2008, the 9th Annual Ocelot Festival will be happening at the Marine Military Academy in Harlingen. See attached flier for more information.
Hope you can make to at least one of our Thursday's meetings.
