Arroyo Colorado

January 14, 2010

Hello Arroyo Partners:

I hope that everyone had a happy holiday break with family and friends. 2010 has started with a record breaking cold snap.  It is still too early to tell if the Valley's Citrus made it through the "Freeze" this last weekend but most Citrus growers seemed optimistic that they survived.

We held the O&E WG January 12, 2010 from 3-5 pm at the TAMU Agrilife Extension Center conference room.  The workgroup discussed several topics.  The first being the AC Watershed boundary signs.  With the help of the Storm Water Task Force Cities and TxDOT, we hope to have another 40 signs up by the end of March.  TxDOT has already posted "No Dumping" signs at the bridges over the Arroyo Colorado at FM 493 and FM 907.  We are also planning to partner with Valley Proud Environmental Council and the Storm Water Task Force Cities for their annual Trash Bash to be held April 10, 2010.  We were also informed that the Valley Sportsman Club and Lower Laguna Madre Fly Fisherman's Association will be holding an Arroyo Colorado water-way cleanup from Arroyo City to the "Y" on February 6, 2010 at 8 am.  They will actually be in boats pulling trash out of the water.  If anyone has a boat and wants to help out, please do so.  I will have more details later.   I will post the O&E workgroup meeting summary on the AC website shortly.

This past November the TX Stream Team had a volunteer monitor training workshop.  Two of the participants, David and Ruben Saldana, both 4-H members and cousins, gave a power point presentation on the Arroyo Colorado impairments and the TX Stream Team program to the District 12, 4-H council.  They are hoping to recruit other 4-H members to become AC Stream Team volunteer monitors.  They have also picked out their sampling locations and will begin their monthly sampling this weekend. I want to congratulate these two young men for taking an active role in their watershed and community.

I want to remind everyone that the ACWP will be holding 3 more Work Group meetings next week.

The Ag WG meeting will be held on January 21, 2010 from 9 am-12 pm at the Rio Red classroom at the TAMUK Citrus Center.

The Habitat WG will be held on January 21, 2010 from 2-4 pm at the Rio Red classroom at the TAMUK Citrus Center.

The Arroyo Colorado Steering Committee meeting will be held on January 21, 2010 from 5-7 pm at the Rio Red classroom at the TAMUK Citrus Center.

If there is an issue, topic or project that you would like to discuss during these meetings, please e-mail me so I can include it on the agenda.

It looks like my butterfly garden made it through the "Freeze" of 2010.  I watered it and covered it up with a tarp just to make sure. Everything else at the house had black, wilted foliage by Monday morning.

Looking ahead,

Jaime J Flores
