Arroyo Colorado

January 13, 2011

Hello Arroyo Partners:

I hope that everyone had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.  It is finally cold down here in the Rio Grande Valley but bone dry.  We still have not received any substantial rainfall since this summer.  Compared to some of the severe winter weather in the Northeast, I will take the dry, 45 degree weather here in the Valley.

I want to remind everyone that the ACWP will be holding two Work Group meetings and the Steering Committee meeting in February.  We have several announcements regarding ongoing projects as well as new projects and grants in the watershed and hope we get a good turnout for our workgroup meetings.  This is your opportunity to take an active role in your watershed.  I hope we can start off 2011 on a very positive note.

The O&E WG will be held on February 8, 2010 from 10-12 pm at the Agrilife Extension Center conference room.  The extension center is located at 2401 E. Expressway 83 in Weslaco, TX.

Please note that the date of the Habitat and Steering Committee meetings have been changed to February 10, 2011.  This was done at the request of several SC members.

The Arroyo Colorado Habitat Workgroup meeting will be held on February 10, from 2-4 pm at the Estero Llano Grande World Birding Center located at 3301 S. FM 1015 in Weslaco, TX.

The Arroyo Colorado Watershed Partnership will be hosting an Arroyo Colorado Steering Committee meeting on February 10, from 5-7 pm.  Food and refreshments will be served from 4:30-5:00 pm.  The meeting will be held at The Estero Llano Grande World Birding Center located at 3301 S. FM 1015 in Weslaco,TX.

I have not been able to go fishing but did receive a report last Saturday from Capt. Richard Lopez.  I was unable to accompany Capt. Lopez because of the NFL Wildcard Playoff games and because the water is still very cold.  He headed North of Port Mansfield into some deep water right off of the Inter-coastal canal.  He was wading in waist deep and higher water using plastics and an extremely slow retrieve.  He caught a limit of 5 keeper trout with one of them being a fat, 24" trout.  We have a scouting trip planned for this weekend but it depends on the weather.  I will keep you posted but have a feeling that I will be watching football.

Looking ahead,
Jaime J Flores
