Arroyo Colorado

June 19, 2013

Hello Arroyo Partners:

The Rio Grande Valley has continued to receive some decent rainfall totals throughout the month.  It seemed like every weekend for the last month, a line of thunderstorms would pop up and rumble through the Valley.  This past weekend it did not rain in the RGV but there was heavy rain and thunderstorms up around the Eagle Pass section of the Rio Grande Watershed.  The rain event was so intense that it flooded Eagle Pass along the Rio Grande River and had raised the water level in Falcon by over 1 foot by Tuesday and was still rising.  The IBWC and the Water Master take daily water level measurements and they will keep us posted.

I want to remind everyone that the ACWP will be holding several of their Work Group meetings in July.

The Arroyo Colorado Habitat Workgroup meeting will be held on July 18, 2013 from 2-4 pm at the Estero Llano Grande World Birding Center located at 3301 S. FM 1015, Weslaco, TX.

The Arroyo Colorado Watershed Partnership will be hosting an Arroyo Colorado Steering Committee meeting on July 18, from 5-7 pm.  Food and refreshments will be served from 4:30-5:00 pm.  The meeting will be held at The Estero Llano Grande World Birding Center located at 3301 S. FM 1015, Weslaco, TX.

The Habitat and SC meetings will be held at Pauraque Hall in the rear of the park.

We are currently conducting an Assessment of the Arroyo Colorado Watershed Protection Plan and need your feedback.  In our last meetings, we asked all of the workgroups to conduct their own assessments of the plan and provide us with their comments.  I would like to extend that invitation to all of our Arroyo Partners and anyone receiving this email.  All of the comments received will be used to guide the development of the Update of the Arroyo Colorado WPP.  We need comments back by the end of July.

I want to remind everyone that the ACC Boat Raffle is right around the corner.  We are raffling off a fantastic 190 Dargel Skout.  Do not miss out on the opportunity to win this boat.  We need all of our Arroyo Partners to help sell more raffle tickets!  We have a bunch sold we but we need to sell them all.  Please contact me about selling tickets.  I will deliver the tickets to you if I have too!

Please mark your calendars for the upcoming event:

- Texas Water Resources Institute & Texas A&M AgriLife Extension will be hosting a “Beat the Heat-Water Efficient Landscapes with Native Plants” Workshop on Saturday, June 29th 9:00 am-1:00 pm at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center, 2401 East Bus. Highway 83, Weslaco, TX.  Topics will include; indoor water conservation, rain water collection, soil amendments, native plants and landscape design plans for your home.  The workshop is made possible by generous funding from the Rio Grande Basin Initiative.

I finally got away to do a little fishing a couple of weeks ago.  We launched from Arroyo City and went straight to Gas Well.  We caught a bunch of trout using live shrimp under popping corks but nothing over 20” and couldn’t find any reds.  The next week, a buddy needed some help catching some alligator gar.  I decided to go for research purposes.  We lost several big gars but we both managed to land a solid 4 foot gar apiece.   I will keep you posted.

Looking ahead,
Jaime Flores, P.G.
