Hello Arroyo Partners:
Last Saturday at noon was the official start of the Special White Winged Dove Season down here in the RGV. It is always a special time of the year for many of the sportsman in the RGV. All morning, at all of the stores, restaurants and gas stations you could see whole families decked out in their hunting gear. The “Paloma”, as the season is referred to, is a time to reunite with family, friends and old hunting buddies and pass on our rich hunting traditions to the younger generations. Sure enough, you can’t have opening day of “Paloma” season without some rain. Throughout the week, the RGV received some much needed from remnants of Tropic Storm Dolly that made landfall Tuesday evening just south of Tampico, Mexico. The entire RGV received steady, tropical rain totaling between 4-6 inches. The weather prognosticators are predicting even more rain for this weekend and next week as a cold front moves through Texas and mixes with the tropical moisture coming in off of the Gulf of Mexico.

I had some friends over at my house to kick off White Wing season. The birds were flying, we had the BBQ pit on and had a great time. It is amazing how fast, fleet and hardy the white wing dove can be, truly a game bird worthy of its own special season. We also noticed the beginnings of the Fall migration south. We saw a several hawks moving through and the hummingbirds were starting to show up in good numbers. I had to refill my hummingbird feeders twice over the weekend. I will keep you posted.
