Education and outreach to the public are a key part of restoring the Arroyo Colorado Watershed.
To educate the younger generation and watershed residents on the importance of conserving water and soil resources, the following models listed below can be demonstrated at schools, educational programs, and other events.
Physical Watershed Model

A plastic relief model of the Arroyo Colorado watershed and portions of the South Laguna Madre HUC was built to help educate people about the watershed and the geography of the Cameron, Hidalgo and Willacy Counties. The physical watershed model of the Arroyo Colorado was funded by the Nueces River Authority through the Clean Rivers Program. It is on permanent loan to the Arroyo Colorado Watershed Partnership and is available to all Partners. This 3′ x 7′ model of the Arroyo Colorado is made of tough durable plastic with a metal frame and used to educate people about watershed function and how nonpoint source pollution occurs.

Large Scale Rainfall Simulator

The large scale rainfall simulator helps people visualize and how land stewardship influences runoff or infiltration. People will understand how land management practices (plant residues, native plants, bare soil, etc.) impact our soil and water resources.
Tabletop Rainfall Simulator

The tabletop rainfall simulator is small scale and educates the public the importance of soil cover and how land management influences soil erosion and water quality.
Are you interested in having one of these models at your next event? Are you interested in having someone provide information on the Arroyo Colorado at your next meeting?
To request a speaker or would like to have one of the above models at your next event, please contact Samantha Colunga.
