Lone Star Healthy Streams and Friends Workshop – Weslaco

Join us! The Lone Star Healthy Streams (LSHS), the Texas Well Owner Network (TWON), and Arroyo Colorado Watershed Partnership are hosting an upcoming event on June 23, 2026 at the D12 AgriLife Center in Weslaco. This series is a whole watershed approach that allows residents to have their private well water screened, and/or soil samples tested, as well as provide education training for surface water and groundwater protection.
The event will offer free soil testing for grazing, range and hay lands and free water well screenings for private water wells, along with educational training on groundwater and surface water protection. This event is open to the public in Hidalgo, Cameron and Willacy Counties.
Register here starting May 11, 2026 or call the District 12 AgriLife-Weslaco Office at 979-314-9382.
“The Texas Well Owner Network program is for Texas residents who depend on a household well for their water needs,” said Joel Pigg, AgriLife Extension program specialist and TWON coordinator, Texas A&M Department of Soil and Crop Sciences, Bryan-College Station.
“The Lone Star Healthy Streams education component aims to increase awareness of surface water pollution originating from livestock and feral hogs,” said Leanne Jackson, AgriLife Extension program specialist and LSHS coordinator, Department of Soil and Crop Sciences, Bryan-College Station. “It promotes land and water stewardship and encourages implementation of proven best management practices.”
Water Sampling Instructions – Attendees are asked to follow the water sample instructions available on the TWON website. It is essential for those submitting samples to attend the follow-up meeting to receive results, learn corrective measures for identified problems and improve their understanding of private well management.
Well water samples must be dropped off from 8:00-10:00 a.m. on June 22 at the D12 AgriLife Weslaco Office 2415 E. HWY 83 Weslaco, or at Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service offices in Hidalgo, Cameron, and Willacy Counties. Water samples will be screened for contaminants, including total coliform bacteria, E. coli, nitrate-nitrogen and salinity.
Soil Sampling Instructions – The LSHS program will also cover the cost of two soil samples per attendee. Soil sample testing should be from pasture, hay or rangeland areas. Soil samples can be dropped off on June 22 at the D12 AgriLife Weslaco Office or brought to the education meeting on June 23. No official bag is needed for drop-off; lab bags will be provided at the meeting. Soil sampling instructions are found on the soil submittal form at the AgriLife Extension Soil, Water and Forage Testing Laboratory website or ask any AgriLife Extension county agent for guidance.
