The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and the Texas Water Resources Institute are once again offering free soil testing for agricultural producers in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. This program supports the implementation of the Arroyo Colorado Watershed Protection Plan and will result in reduced nutrient loading to area waterbodies all while saving the producer’s input costs.

It looks like it is shaping up to be a wet Fall and Winter. It has been raining for the on and off for the last 3 weeks and in between the rains, the temperature is still reaching +90*. We sure could use some more rain. The weather prognosticators are predicting a cold front for Monday that should trigger even more rain. We will wait and see. We have a great workshop coming up, see below.

We have been receiving some very much needed rain. You can almost set your clock to it; opening day of white-wing season in the Valley, and it rains! At least we got the first day of hunting in before the rains started. The weather prognosticators are predicting a wet fall and winter for the RGV. I hope that they are right.

It has been brutally hot since the Flooding event last month. We are breaking records with triple digit temperatures on a daily basis. I hope this is not the new normal here in the Valley. I hope everyone is well rested from the holidays and that you are off to a very good new year. The weather has been very mild this winter. We have not received all of the rain associated with the cold fronts that have blown through the last month or so. The tail end of the front keeps missing the Valley and rains on the Coastal Bend. Hopefully the next couple of fronts will reach us and we will have a wet January and February.

We were fortunate and did receive some much needed rain without any major flooding. It looks like we might dry out for a bit before the next disturbance coming off of Cuba enters the Gulf. We can only hope this turns out to be just a “rain maker” and nothing too serious. I hope the folks dealing with Florence survive the storm and unprecedented flooding. They have a long way to go before they will be able to assess the total impact of the storm.

It has been a brutally hot summer with no end in sight. We are looking to the tropics for some relief but that can be a double edge sword. You pray for some rain but you get a hurricane instead. Hopefully September and October will be wet months leading us into winter.

The last couple of Artic cold fronts have weakened and did not made it all the way to the Rio Grande Valley. All of the storms the fronts are causing just north of us are drawing in warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico to fuel the violent weather. For us, that has meant that the wind has been howling for the last several days, up to 40-50 mph gusts are being recorded. I hope are neighbors to the north of us stay out of harm’s way as these late winter storms blow through.

Last night a cold front came barreling through the RGV sparking thunderstorms, rain and some hail. Unfortunately, the whole thing was over so fast that by morning you could hardly tell it rained except for the cooler temperatures and lower humidity. The weather prognosticators have forecasted that the RGV will be back in the mid 90’s by Tuesday.
